Klobuchar, D-Minn., Recently introduced legislation that would seek to limit Section 230, the accountability shield for social media platforms, as debate intensifies around disinformation for elections and issues of health.
“Senator Warner, Hirono and I have already introduced a bill that would focus on discriminatory and other content when we have a public health crisis and people are dying every day,” Klobuchar said on “State of the Union. “from CNN.
“These are the richest companies in the world,” she continued. “There’s absolutely no reason they couldn’t be able to better monitor this and get this shit out of their platforms that are basically saying to people, ‘Oh, hey, there are problems’, when we know that science proves that there is none. “
Klobuchar Safe Tech Act, introduced in february, aimed to hold companies like Google, Twitter and Facebook accountable for harassment-related content, but Klobuchar wants the legislation to specifically address misinformation around vaccinations.
His comments strengthen Democrats’ position after President Biden said Facebook was “killing people” by failing to act to more rigorously monitor “COVID disinformation.”
“They kill people,” Biden replied. “The only pandemic we have is among the unvaccinated, and they are killing people.”
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the administration was communicate with facebook work on limiting “disinformation” on the platform.
Klobuchar said social media had “greatly” contributed to the “misinformation,” citing figures that “two-thirds of people who have not been vaccinated say … they have something social media.”
His solution: destroy companies to dilute their reach and influence.
“Part of it is because they’ve swallowed up so many companies that you don’t even have the chance that other media platforms can do it on social media,” Klobuchar said. “So I’m a fan of using antitrust laws to look back and see if they should divest any assets so that we can once again find real competition.”
