News Release 60 – Investigating Officer Involvement in Shooting or Homicide

Officer involved in a shooting or homicide investigation

Birmingham Police Department reports an officer has been involved in a shooting investigation and a homicide investigation is ongoing. The incident happened on Monday, March 21, 2022 at the University Crossings apartment complex.

Just after 5:00 p.m., South Ward officers responded to the hostage situation in Block 200 of 3rd SW Street. Upon arrival, officers observed a woman shooting a man in the officer’s presence, resulting in his death. An officer discharged his weapon striking the female subject. The woman was taken to an area hospital by Birmingham Fire and Rescue with non-life-threatening injuries. No officers were injured in this incident.

Alabama Law Enforcement will be the lead investigative agency on the officer involved in the shooting and the homicide investigation. Officers involved in this incident will be placed on administrative leave in accordance with Birmingham Police Department policies and procedures.
