ST. FRANCOIS COUNTY, Missouri – The community of St. Francois County will have the opportunity to design a new county seal after the current seal is criticized on social media.
A Reddit user recently posted an image of the county seal, which drew hundreds of comments, mostly negative.
At Tuesday’s county commission meeting, Presidential Commissioner Harold Gallaher agreed the county needed a new seal, saying it had little time in 2018 to create the current seal.
“It’s the fever, I understand, on social media about the county seal,” he said. “And it was an urgent matter at the time. I have had two days to find a seal and my design of the seal is positive proof that I am not inclined to art. I am artistically declined.
Gallaher said he didn’t want to pay a designer fee and use taxpayer money for a new seal. A design competition open to the community was mentioned during the meeting.
“If anyone wants to redesign that seal, come on, let’s see what you’ve got,” said Gallaher.
He noted that he would like the new seal to have a symbol on the parks and not have too much red in color because “it is fading too quickly”.
“I wish it was better than the seal we have now, which would be a slam dunk,” said Gallaher.
More information on the county seal design competition will be announced at next week’s committee meeting.
