Gannett Issues Statement in Response to Wall Street Journal Article Regarding Ad Data | Business

MCLEAN, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–March 9, 2022–

Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI) today issued a response to an article published by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on March 8 which implicates that Gannett intentionally shared inaccurate information with advertisers over a period of nine months.

Gannett sincerely regrets that I inadvertently passed the incorrect data parameter. This human error was immediately corrected when the company independently discovered the issue. The data parameter issue was caused by a caching error when the company implemented changes to how data is passed from the publisher to ad exchanges.

Importantly, revenue associated with third-party programmatic ad exchanges that potentially used the incorrect data parameter in question was less than $10 million in total over the relevant time period. Additionally, none of Gannett’s direct-sold digital ads or direct-sold programmatic ads were affected.

No user-level data was affected and there was no impact on geo-specific ad placement or targeting of user data and in all cases the ads remained in the USA TODAY NETWORK network of sites. Only certain exchanges have adopted this specification, which has greatly reduced the potential impact. Similarly, Gannett believes that the number of advertisers impacted by this error was nominal relative to Gannett’s overall programmatic advertising universe.

Gannett has fully evaluated the product release quality assurance program and is implementing procedures to ensure that such an error does not occur in the future.
