Former Suns GM McDonough, fans react on social media to Suns keeping Ayton

Deandre Ayton remains in Phoenix.

The Suns are restarting next season with their starting center and restricted free agent after matching the Indiana Pacers’ four-year, $133 million maximum contract offer on Thursday.

After two months of speculation following the Suns’ Game 7 playoff loss and Ayton’s speculated acrimony with the team afterwards, the social media reactions to the deal being secured came as fast as the corresponding offer.

As promised by Suns general manager James Jones, Ayton and the team had to wait until the end of the season to close the deal. Ayton wanted a max rookie deal early last season, like many of his peers from the 2018 draft, but negotiations fell through.

Amid their stalled trade negotiations with the Brooklyn Nets to get Kevin Durant, the matched offer came within five hours instead of the allotted 48 until Saturday at 8:59 p.m. local time.

Phoenix’s chance to sign and trade for Ayton was eliminated after he accepted terms and signed the Pacers’ offer, then the Suns would have matched it an hour later.

Here are some fun and analytical reactions from fans and NBA pundits, including former Suns general manager Ryan McDonough, who drafted Ayton, regarding Ayton getting the bag he’s wanted for 10 months.
