Christiansburg resident finds passion for life through social media challenge

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) – It’s something most of us can relate to, the daily scroll of social media. For Blake Gore, who has a background in higher education at universities like Vanderbilt and Radford, it was this simple act that earned him a new passion.

“I never had any art classes or formal education outside of high school, and I never drew or doodled or anything like that. At 37, I saw a drawing challenge do Twitter’s turn.

The challenge was to create a new drawing for 30 days, but the catch was to make that drawing in a 1 inch by 1 inch space.

“It was a lot of fun and after doing it for 30 days, I kind of made it part of my routine.”

Twitter users also started asking Gore if he was selling his parts.

“People were so interested in it and wanted to order different parts. Whether it’s their childhood home or a pet, it’s grown.

Gore is now able to sell his pieces, but his love for design has never been about money.

“If I did it for free I would still do it at the same pace, it’s so much fun.”

The pressure of drawing in such small spaces does not come without stress!

“When you’re working in an inch-by-inch space, every little dot, every little line means so much, so it’s quite stressful. On the other hand, it takes so much attention that I get lost in it. really.

Four years later, at 41, Gore is as passionate as ever and hopes to encourage others that it’s never too late to learn something new.

“My advice to people is if something interests you, try it. Don’t expect to be an expert from the start, but trust your ability to learn.

And if you’re willing to trust, that call could come from the most unexpected places.
